Presentation | Optical Solutions and Components for the NPO/CPO & ELSFP Ecosystem
Date Posted:2026-08-27
On September 7th, 2026, from 15:05 to 15:30 (CEST), Dr. Wilfried Noell, Chief Scientist at Focuslight, will attend the upcoming EPIC (European Photonics Industry Consortium) Online Technology Meeting on Optical Connectors, and deliver a talk titled “Optical Solutions and Components for the NPO/CPO & ELSFP Ecosystem”.
Abstract
Near-Packaged Optics (NPO) and Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) are emerging as key technologies enabling ultra-high data rates across AI infrastructure and data centers. Within these optical interconnect architectures, high-precision photonics components, beam coupling, and advanced packaging technologies serve as the essential enablers for achieving high-bandwidth, low-power and high-reliability transmission. As an active member of the photonics ecosystem, Focuslight develops and manufactures optics and diode laser submounts, providing core support for the next-generation optical communication technologies.
In this presentation, Dr. Wilfried Noell will share Focuslight’s end-to-end photonics solutions for the NPO and CPO applications, including coupling lenses and submounts for Ultra-High-Power Laser (UHP ELSFP), V-groove array for high-channel-density Fiber Array Units (FAU), and Micro Prism Lens Array (MPLA) for optical engines utilizing high-shoreline-density PICs. Focuslight’s custom solutions provide precise interfacing with PICs, FAUs, and ELSFPs, while high-precision V-groove arrays ensure high optical coupling efficiency for FAU assemblies.
Focuslight continues to expand its integrated photonics manufacturing capabilities for optical communications. With comprehensive strengths in materials, components, assemblies, advanced manufacturing processes and equipment, the company provides customers with end‑to‑end support ranging from product design and validation through ramp-up to mass production. This integrated approach will help accelerate product development, improve manufacturing yield, and enable more scalable deployment of next-generation optical communication technologies.
Dr. Wilfried Noell is Chief Scientist at Focuslight, with 30 years of experience in the photonics industry and deep expertise in electro-optics on InP, Silicon Photonics (SiPho), micro-optics, and photonic miniaturization. He held senior R&D roles at Comet AG and SUSS MicroOptics, and is author or co-author of more than 150 publications and 20 patent applications. His academic career spans TU Darmstadt, Deutsche Telekom, IMM Mainz, and Uni Neuchâtel / EPFL, where he made significant contributions to Optical MEMS and micromechanical systems.
