On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, from 16:15 to 17:45 (SGT), Lichen Sun, Product Line Manager of the Global Photonics Foundry and Strategic Growth Division at Focuslight, will attend the 2025 EPIC - Tech Watch conference, held alongside the Asia Photonics Expo 2025 (APE 2025), co-organized by Informa Markets and the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC). He will deliver a presentation at APE 2025 on the topic of "Unlocking the Potential of Wafer-Level Technology for Emerging Applications."

In September 2024, Focuslight successfully completed the acquisition of optical component assets from ams OSRAM AG, including the world-leading Wafer Level Optics (WLO) and Wafer Level Stacking (WLS) technologies, along with licensing of core patents in these areas. This presentation will introduce the extensive applications and profound impact of these cutting-edge technologies in emerging fields such as consumer electronics, automotive manufacturing, and medical and health.
Wafer Level Optics (WLO) technology, characterized by the precision and efficiency of semiconductor processes, enables the high-volume and highly accurate replication of lenses on entire glass wafers. Within this, lens wafers can be flexibly diced into individual WLO components tailored for specific applications. Taking a step further, Wafer Level Stacking (WLS) technology allows for the micron-level precision stacking of multiple lens wafers, which are then diced into individual micro-optical imaging lenses. During this process, additional functionalities such as apertures, coatings, and spectral filters can be integrated, ensuring miniaturization and high-precision optical components while significantly improving production efficiency and scalability. This lays a solid foundation for large-scale, high-quality mass production.
Building upon WLS technology, Wafer Level Integration (WLI) enables the seamless integration of chip-scale packaged (CSP) sensors into ultra-thin, optically sealed, working modules—eliminating the need for additional barrels or brackets. This innovative approach not only enhances design flexibility and space utilization but also results in a more compact and efficient optical module. More importantly, it provides an ideal reflowable solution for CSP sensors, ensuring exceptional stability and reliability throughout the manufacturing process. This breakthrough paves the way for the development of high-performance, miniaturized optical systems.
These advanced technologies are widely applied in the production of advanced optical components, including plano/hybrid optics, projection/imaging optics, diffractive optical elements (DOE), and microlens arrays (MLA). These components play a crucial role in applications such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), automotive projection lighting systems, disposable endoscopes for medical use, and industrial robotics.
In its existing business sectors, such as automotive projection and lighting, Focuslight remains committed to expanding market share, optimizing cost structures, and strengthening global competitiveness to deliver excellent values to customers worldwide. Additionally, the company is actively exploring emerging markets, particularly in consumer electronics and disposable endoscopy, where the demand for compact, high-performance, and cost-effective optical solutions is rapidly growing.
By establishing advanced process development and manufacturing service centers in Singapore and across Southeast Asia, Focuslight is gradually building a global photonics process and manufacturing service network. This strategic initiative underscores the company’s commitment to becoming a global hub for photonics process development and manufacturing, offering flexible, efficient manufacturing facilities worldwide based on customer needs.
As a one-stop provider of products and services, Focuslight is dedicated to driving technological innovation to meet the growing demand for high-performance, miniaturized optical solutions, shaping the future of the global photonics industry.
